Is Surgery a Necessary Fertility Treatment?

Many couples who have difficulty concieving may wonder whether surgery will be a necessary fertility treatment. For some couples, the idea of having to undergo surgery in order to achieve pregnancy is daunting, if not completely off-putting. The good news is, while surgery is certainly an option as a treatment for fertility, it isn't the only option, or even in most cases the first option your doctor will recommend. And in those cases where surgery is an important first step, the surgeries are, generally speaking, fairly mild and standard surgeries that don't require huge amounts of recovery time.

If a structural problem is preventing you from concieving, then surgery is a necessary first step, and may or may not be followed with a pill- or injection-based treatment plan to increase your likelihood of concieving. In this case, you will need to talk with your doctor as well as your health insurance provider to determine what procedure you need and whether your health insurance will cover all or part of the cost, or not. In some cases, health insurance will pick up a large portion of the bill, but in many if not most cases, it won't be covered at all. Be sure to check before committing to a procedure that can be very expensive and may require several steps, such as surgery and injections or pills afterwards. All too often patients are taken by surprise--after they've already made a committment--when they learn that their insurance provider will not cover fertility treatments. To be on the safe side, always check first.

If, however, no structural abnormalities or other physical problems are found, chances are good that surgery will *not* be the first treatment your doctor recommends. Most likely your doctor will recommend you start with a pill form of a fertility drug, then possibly graduate to injections, and only consider surgery as a last resort. In this case, fertility treatments--while still expensive--are within reach for most couples, and having a baby need no longer seem so daunting.
