The Fertility Test and You

You may be familiar with pregnancy tests, which allow you do determine--with varying degrees of accuracy--whether you are pregnant or not, without the hassle and expense of a doctor's visit. However, did you know that there's now a "pre-pregnancy" test? It's true. Fertility tests are designed to make it easier for you to get pregnant by determining where you are in your fertility cycle, so that you can make the most of it. Like your standard pregnancy test, they're designed for home use, and also like your standard pregnancy test, they have varying levels of accuracy and usefulness.

So how do they work? Well, different pregnancy tests will work in different ways, but in general, they all measure changes in various hormone levels, levels which change as your body becomes more or less fertile. Fertility moves in a cycle, with one time in the month being your peak fertility time, and another being your lowest point. Fertility tests are designed to help you determine when you're about to reach that peak fertility point. But even if you can predict that most fertile moment, it still doesn't guarantee you'll concieve. Plus, it's not as much fun as trying for a baby every night.

All joking aside, fertility tests are useful for couples who, whether for financial reasons or otherwise, are trying to carefully time their baby's conception and/or birth. However, they are expensive, ranging anywhere from $40 USD to over $250 USD, and while many of them are reusable, it's still not an expense that an average couple should enter into lightly. The couple who really must try to time their baby's conception carefully--must try, because not even using a test will guarantee that the couple will successfully concieve--will find the test desirable, if not cheap or always accurate. Other couples, however, should give serious thought before purchasing one.
