Why Consider Fertility Drugs?

Women who are having trouble getting pregnant often turn to fertility drugs in an attempt to change the circumstances they are dealing with. These drugs work by stimulating the ovaries, using certain hormones, which then allows the release of extra eggs which can increase the chance of a woman conceiving. These drugs are not necessarily new; some have been around for over thirty years, though new ones continue to surface. One of the problems with these drugs is that many women fear using them because they are concerned about the possibility of a multiple birth. They would feel better if they knew that on average fertility drugs only increase the chance of a multiple birth by no more than fifteen percent.

The sad fact is that just over seven percent of Amercian married couples, the only type of couples where there is statistical information for, deal with issues of infertility. Of these couples, only about thirty percent will actually try to get medical help. This in itself is very sad since nearly ninety percent of the problems that face couples can be repaired easily. The common infertility issues deal with the women’s ability to produce enough eggs, fallopian tubes that are blocked, or for men mobility and motility issues. Some of the problems are fixed by surgery and others need only the assistance of fertility drugs to correct them. But, with such a small number of couples seeking advice, many of them never have the children they so desperately want.

One of the biggest problems, especially in women over thirty seven, is the proper production of the eggs. This problem can be in different forms. It can be that the egg is not of good enough quality, that a woman does not ovulate regularly or at all or a few other egg production problems. There are several solutions to these problems. For example, a woman can decide to use an egg donor, try in vitro fertilization, or she can start with the easiest solution and try fertility drugs.
