The reason a couple goes to a fertility clinic is because they are having trouble conceiving and are hoping to get help from fertility specialists to remedy this problem. The first thing they must understand is what the definition of infertility is. This term means that a couple has been trying to conceive, and has been having unprotected sexual intercourse, for a period of at least twelve months without conceiving. But even this needs further qualification to explain more clearly the problem a couple is having. Primary infertility is when a woman has never been pregnant and is unable to get pregnant. But sometimes a woman has had a child, or two, and then is unable to get pregnant again. This is called secondary infertility and is a different problem. Sterility means there is no possibility of getting pregnant. Very few cases when couples are unable to conceive, if the woman is no more than in her early forties, is it anything more than a fertility problem. Sterility is much rarer.

Sometimes how old you are affects when you decide to get help for a fertility issue. But most of the time, the health care specialist will suggest that you give it a year before you decide to seek help. The older you are, the faster they tell you to get help. If the woman is thirty seven to forty waiting twelve months is not as important. A lesser period of time will be okay and if she is over forty than no more than six months should go by before the couple seeks help from a specialist at a fertility clinic.

When a couple first goes to a fertility clinic, there will be a certain amount of time that will be devoted to testing both partners to see if it can be determined what they issues are. Sometimes the problems are easy to find and easy to repair. Perhaps some minor surgery might be required to repair a Varicoceles, enlarged varicose veins in a man’s scrotum, which is known to be the cause of infertility in forty percent of the cases of infertility in men. Sometimes a minor repair to a woman’s fallopian tubes can change the chance of conceiving. But if surgery is not the answer there are so many others, including in vitro fertilization, that more coupes who previously would not be able to convince are finding that now they can.
